[17:04] jfw: nekoluce, the inkscape tutorial collections I noted: https://inkscape.org/learn/tutorials/ http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/
[17:05] nekoluce: thank you
[17:09] jfw: yw

[23:21] nekoluce: sorry but i cant get on eulora
[23:21] nekoluce: is everything alight with the game ?
Day changed to 2026-09-07
[00:03] jfw: nekoluce: it's working from here
[16:00] nekoluce: thank you ill try again to play
[16:06] nekoluce: 877-762 could not load plugin ‘crystalspace.window.x.extf86vm’
[16:06] nekoluce: could not load plugin ‘crystalspace.sndsys.element.ogg’
[16:06] nekoluce: it shows this error
[16:36] whaack: howdy all
[16:42] jfw: wb whaack
[16:42] dorion: hey whaack
[16:42] jfw: nekoluce, you started it in the usual way from ./play.sh? any idea what changed since it last started fine?
[16:43] nekoluce: no no i use the same command
[16:43] jfw: you told me something about the computer glitching on boot-up, what happened exactly?
[16:43] nekoluce: but like i initate it and it wont go further than player id
[16:43] nekoluce: ah yes but im already inside the computer
[16:43] nekoluce: i was trying torun the game again and for two days i have been able too
[16:44] whaack: speaking of computer's glitching, the comps i bought from jwrd are having an issue where random keys stop responding
[16:44] whaack: i have to use an external keyboard now for the online computer, for the offline only the arrow keys have failed which is annoying but i can get by without them
[16:45] whaack: how's it going in Panama?
[16:45] dorion: whaack, the upside of the x200 is replacing the keyboard is pretty easy.
[16:45] jfw: whaack: does it feel like a physical keyboard issue with the keys sticking?
[16:45] whaack: ah cool, i'll look into it
[16:45] whaack: i assume it is a physical issue but i didn't notice sticky keys
[16:46] jfw: the humidity out there might not be easy on the switch contacts.
[16:47] nekoluce: isnt the command for eulora always ./play.sh?
[16:48] jfw: nekoluce: yes. perhaps those plugin errors aren't significant - the graphics load and it's just stuck waiting for player id?
[16:50] whaack: jfw: yeah perhaps that's the culprit
[16:50] jfw: I thought maybe your home IP changed but I checked the proxy logs and it hasn't blocked anything lately
[16:50] nekoluce: yes it get stuck in the player id
[16:52] jfw: whaack: you can check ebay for x200 keyboards, might need to watch for a while as new ones were getting rarer.
[16:52] nekoluce: it says acquiring player id and thats it
[16:54] jfw: nekoluce: can you do a "tail -n 100 data/logs_eulora_client.txt" and jpaste that?
[16:55] nekoluce: where do i put that hun?
[16:55] nekoluce: i tried on the eulora box but didnot do anything
[16:56] jfw: that's from the same euloraclient directory with the play.sh.
[16:58] nekoluce: http://jfxpt.com/paste/j3ae44w3uk
[17:00] jfw: nekoluce: did anything more get cut off at the end, with that ";Hear" ?

[17:01] nekoluce: luz@jfw-Latitude-5490:~/eulora/euloraclient$ ^C
[17:01] dorion: whaack, a web search returned : https://www.laptopinventory.com/ModelDetail.php/Lenovo/Thinkpad%20X%20Series/X200/Keyboard/9107 ; we've not bought from there and ~2x the typical price on ebay. but like jfw said, new on ebay can be rare.
[17:02] whaack: thanks, i don't know that i'd buy a new keyboard tho, i don't mind using an extenral keyboard, i accept the risk that it could have a wifi chip in it, but once i plug an external keyboard in either laptop i've dedicated that keyboard to that laptop and will not plug it in anywhere else
[17:03] jfw: nekoluce: can you figure out your current home public IP address and pm it to me, just to rule out that issue?
[17:03] nekoluce: okay
[17:06] jfw: whaack: as long as it's not a bluetooth/cordless keyboard that we *know* is spraying RF, then it should be as safe as anything.
[17:10] whaack: yeah that's what i figured
[17:10] dorion: i use my online gales via kvm.
[17:11] dorion: are you getting anywhere with eulora whaack ?
[17:13] whaack: no, i haven't taken the time to set it up. i may be able to get it rolling this week though, should i post on ossasepia to find out where to download the client / make an account?
[17:14] jfw: nekoluce: your IP did change, still not sure why it's not showing in the logs but I've updated the whitelist, so try again now.
[17:15] whaack: i've finally tested what it's like using the new AI tools to write.a webapp, i made beta.bridgejunkies.com , a bridge playing website , i wa quite impressed with how fast i could get a prototype out using claude
[17:15] nekoluce: do you use claude pro whaack?
[17:16] whaack: i'm not sure what the name of the plan is, but i pay $100/mo for it, was using the $20/mo plan but i was bypassing my tokken limit
[17:16] whaack: err exceding my token limit i should say*
[17:16] dorion: whaack, the install script and readme are linked from this.
[17:16] whaack: ty dorion
[17:17] dorion: Percival Platepress is using a clanker to make a eulora client in rust. he seems a bit more interested in the client making than the gameplay so far, but everyone starts somewhere.
[17:20] dorion: whaack, btw, the keypair and the associated character is created upon first running the client.
[17:22] dorion: so no need to ask for any account, just run the client. you'll need a rating for voice in the chatroom, so tell one of use the name of your char when you've created it.
[17:22] jfw: I tried gemini to knock up a quick modern looking web file manager for a prospective client; it was a 5 minutes to write, 8 hours to clean up the machine's mess kind of thing.
[17:23] whaack: ok thanks dorion
[17:24] dorion: jfw, supposedly the different llm flavors have different strengths & weaknesses.
[17:25] jfw: meh. they all run on hallucination.
[17:26] jfw: they're strong at approximately copying what's been done a million times before, and fucking you over without warning once you stray a bit from the invisible path
[17:30] jfw: one way I've started to see them is the corporate world's workaround to the copyright regime since they can't get away with direct piracy; IP laundering basically
[17:30] whaack: I've been impressed by the Claude client at how fast I could build a prototype for my bridge website. It's not without its quirks, but when it does fart I am able to prompt it calling out it's mistake and it's able to fix it. The dangerous part is how far I've gotten without reading the code nor even reading all of what Claude informs me about what it's doing. But even as the site grows in complexity it seems to be able to make the changes I desire without m
[17:30] whaack: e having to understand what it's doing.
[17:30] whaack: What do you mean by they run on hallucination
[17:30] whaack: ?
[17:33] whaack: And yes I have not tried to do something that is new. For example let's say I came up with my own card game and then tried to use Claude to program it. I'm not sure how that would go. Claude has all the lingo and understanding of the card game Bridge in its DB so it seems to "already know what to do"
[17:34] jfw: I mean they don't follow any rational or logical process at any point in their operation. they're like dream generators or intuition machines. that can still be useful for discovering ideas, integrating things from different fields and such. but everything has to be verified on your own. making up nonsense isn't some unfortunate exception or bug, it's the core of what they do.
[17:35] jfw: and the seductive part is that they do it with such confidence
[17:43] whaack: I almost assume that there are some prompts that are being matched via regex , in a sense, and giving logical answers, for example if i write x+y for any x,y i'm guessing it's not using it's normal mode of operation
[17:43] whaack: but i obviously don't trust the Claude's response to what is x+y as much as I trust my T89's
[17:46] jfw: they try to teach them to use tools, like executing prefab code snippets to do the arithmetic; I guess it works for pretty basic stuff that you wouldn't need an AI for anyway
[17:49] jfw: and there's the idea of trying to force logic on them, have them critique their own output, explain a step-by-step deductive process; "prompt engineering"; the result is that much more verbal spew (and token revenue!) and that many more places for it to derail itself if you're not babysitting it all
[17:53] jfw: in practice I'm basically using it and grumbling about it for the same things I used to use and grumble about the prior form of googling, since that one was thoroughly overrun by SEO spam whether human or machine generated.
[17:54] whaack: it does seem to be simply the new and improved form of googling
[17:57] jfw: the last one in theory also helped one to find cool people/sources rather than just answer an immediate question; now the pretense is dropped.

[00:50] caai: hey whaack. how u been?
[00:50] caai: se fue ....
[17:25] jfw: lots of the "drop in, drop out" in general these days.
[17:53] jfw: regarding the fallen log bot, it appears nekoluce triggered a unicode-fail despite all attempts to disable such; in particular, mysql's replace() function is broken, in the sense of exploding in your face for certain inputs without mention of such in the docs.
[17:54] jfw: once I work it out, I expect I'll back-fill the missing lines from my local log.
Day changed to 2026-09-12
[23:28] jfw: wb wotbot, let's test for any further "optimistic utf8" parsing brokenness...
[23:29] wotbot: ready!
[23:32] wotbot: 1. Overlong: criticalÀ¯pathÀ€data
[23:32] wotbot: 2. Truncated: prefixä_broken_suffix
[23:32] wotbot: 3. Forbidden: startþÿõöend

[23:32] wotbot: 5. Surrogate: badí €surrogate
Day changed to 2026-09-13
[02:25] jfw: it was indeed worse: the wordpress posts.post_content column is enforcing valid utf8, which means I can't just put in whatever bytes come from IRC and let the browser sort it out; instead I'm forced to impose an encoding decision on the IRC lines. in the old awklogbot this was implicitly latin1; now I've made that explicit. because if I went utf8 I'd be right back to the "illegal strings" problem.
[02:30] jfw: http://jfxpt.com/2026/jwrd-logs-for-sep-2026/#15896 is what initially shorted out the bot, simply because nobody had tried throwing unicode at it before.
[02:30] wotbot: 2026-09-07 16:06 (#jwrd) nekoluce: 877-762 could not load plugin ‘crystalspace.window.x.extf86vm’
[17:04] jfw: SamyTF, you around?
[18:43] whaack: caai: I've been good, I did a bit of travel these lsat few months, I went to the US for a bit to see friends and family and attend 2 world cup games, then went to Biarritz in France for a birdge competition, then back to NY for my brother's wedding. now I'm back in Costa Rica.
[18:45] whaack: I'm working on a side hustle, math tutoring, also personally I've been focused on my fitness, I've lost about 20 pounds in the last 2 months, I am going to take a break from the weight loss and focus on strength training for a couple of weeks.
[18:46] whaack: I'm also toying around with the idea of making a youtube channel, still brainstorming the content but I am probably going to go with trying to popularize some of the bitcoin ideals discussed in this channel, such as using original versions of the software, using computers instead of hardwallets, etc. etc.
[18:53] whaack: jfw: lots of the "drop in, drop out" in general these days. << yeah, i will see to getting a bouncer back up, and more importantly keeping more in touch in general
[21:22] nekoluce: hey whack that is super cool and the channel is a great idea i maybe tried to made a podcast and had some followers but consistency is a little my problem haha math tutoring is a great thing for kids or adults ?
[21:25] nekoluce: I see the bot problem aint going so well hope you can solve it
[21:39] jfw: whaack: if you want to run a bouncer, perhaps you could rent a VM to colocate it with the server, which I'll be migrating in-house hopefully on the sooner side by now, and offer it as a service for those who struggle with the rigors of IRC?
[21:40] jfw: nekoluce, not sure whose bot you mean but mine is all fixed
[21:40] nekoluce: maybe i saw the testing ?
[21:40] nekoluce: thats why i thought wotbot wasnt working
[21:41] jfw: !w help
[21:41] wotbot: Available commands: hi, help, register, up, down, key, rate, unrate, rated
[21:41] jfw: he's all good now
[21:42] jfw: SamyTF I gather has all his 3D printer parts ready but still too busy to get it moving so we'll convene on Wednesday.
[21:42] jfw: nekoluce: meanwhile perhaps you can link him to http://jfxpt.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/mainboard-5V.png ?
[21:44] nekoluce: okay thank you for the circuit
[21:44] nekoluce: ill send it to him
[21:45] jfw: and in mesh research I'm not so keen on RAKs anymore, it seems like heltec and seeed have strong nRF52 options
[21:49] jfw: that's the processor which uses much less power than the ESP32 boards
[21:53] nekoluce: okay
[21:53] nekoluce: enjoy your meal
[21:54] nekoluce: before i leave yes sammy said that he is busy but i think they are not at home
[21:57] jfw: I see Alvaro has started documenting the MeshPTY meetups and got a local group listing on the main meshtastic site
Day changed to 2026-09-14
[01:00] whaack: nekoluce: Yup consistency is difficult. It's easy to have motivation when starting out but in the end it's discipline that's required to see it through. Wrt to tutoring primarily for kids, but I would tutor adults if they were interested.
[01:12] nekoluce: so cool
[01:13] nekoluce: i think math and spanish are like things that people want to know more now
[01:13] nekoluce: here like there are some persons that teach physics chemistry math and english at least english because not all people here on panama now english
[01:14] nekoluce: or at least are proficient in english
[01:14] nekoluce: and usually people who know english are better pay on their work here at least
[01:17] nekoluce: the other thing here in panama is that i learn from groups that cybersecurity is really important but not so well paid
[01:21] whaack: jfw: sure i'll happily try the hosting service, I'll do a 12 month package, i'll start with size=4 slices and bandwidth=2 Mbps)
[01:23] whaack: nekoluce: I don't think many adults are interested in learning math. It's a bit of a shame, but for an adult studying math is a luxury. People want to learn a second language because it has immediate and more tangible benefits.
[01:25] nekoluce: yeah i think you are right whaack
[01:26] nekoluce: whaack asides of bridge what other hobbies do you have ?
[01:29] whaack: nekoluce: I surf, I have a few others that I've done temporarily (guitar, freediving, pickleball, chess) I may pick up guitar again some day, but for the most part bridge / surfing are the ones I plan to continue for the rest of my life.
[01:30] nekoluce: what is pickleball because i think I have heard it here too also between paddle
[01:31] nekoluce: jfw tried scuba hehe I did snorkle with him
[01:33] whaack: Pickleball is yeah just a racket sport variation, it's a beginner friendly version of tennis, it's mostly played as 2v2 on a smaller court with a whiffle ball

[01:45] jfw: whaack: oh hey, great. I can get that moving probably tomorrow
[01:46] whaack: cool
[01:46] jfw: !w key whaack
[01:46] wotbot: No key registered for name whaack.
[01:47] whaack: ^.I can get that moving tomorrow, heh
[01:47] whaack: but my key has not changed
[01:47] jfw: alright
[01:55] nekoluce: whaack other question for you now that you are teaching math do you think some critical skills will dissapear because people are using ai and started to be to much reliable on it ? and what kind of skills will prevail ?
[02:01] whaack: nekoluce: it's certainly possible but from my short experience teaching in the post-LLM world, kids want to be able to learn how to solve problems on their own. Using an abacus was an art many students used to learn and perhaps something was lost in terms of development with the advent of electronic calculators
[02:03] nekoluce: that is super nice that kids are still interesting on learning math properly
[02:03] nekoluce: interested
[02:06] nekoluce: I have to be honest i still have some math fallancies on math but i dont give up on the idea that I can still learn because math is not only naturally everywhere but is needed for evrything too
[02:07] nekoluce: is not okay to depend on a phone to make the math to order a bill or when purchasing something
[02:07] nekoluce: and some great works like programing or engineering depend on math
[02:08] nekoluce: but math is also fun
[02:17] dorion: http://jfxpt.com/2026/jwrd-logs-for-sep-2026/#16046 -- I actually know someone with a franchise for an abacus school in cr.
[02:17] wotbot: 2026-09-14 02:01 (#jwrd) whaack: nekoluce: it's certainly possible but from my short experience teaching in the post-LLM world, kids want to be able to learn how to solve problems on their own. [02:17] dorion: could be a pipeline for you.
[02:18] whaack: dorion: ha! crazy. Yeah I'd be interested in learning how to use one myself.
[02:20] dorion: i'll get the url from him.
[02:20] whaack: nekoluce: everyone has a deficiency in math. it's just at different levels. Overall though, it seems that the bar is getting lower and lower, the people who can teach it fewer and fewer, etc.
[02:20] whaack: I'm 20 mins past my "no comp after 8pm" rule i'm trying to impose on myself, so goodnight all, talk tomorrow
[02:21] whaack is leaving the chat for real.
[02:22] nekoluce: see you whaack im going to read and then sleep good night guys

[17:57] whaack: jfw thanks, got your message and ssh'd successfully, and i'll keep the extra as credit for now
[17:57] whaack: i'm taking the time to learna. little bit more about galex, so far i've had the learn-the-bare-minimum-to-do-what-i-need-right-now approach to the os
[17:58] jfw: cool, I'm here para cualquier dudas
[18:00] whaack: i may need some advice on handling bitcoind on my centos machine, i'm not by it at the moment but i have a corrupted .bitcoin it seems, i can't fire up bitcoind
[18:01] whaack: blk.dat files don't end nciely, right? I could have blk002.dat that has data partially in blk003.dat iirc
[18:02] whaack: also on my centos using your fetch bitcoind 0006 script i had some error regarding '-lc', sorry again i'm not by my computer so can't give a better description than that
[18:02] whaack: i recently installed a 4tb ssd, and am trying to get my home node up and running again.
[18:07] whaack: another q: if hypothetically speaking i found clients for you and dorion's key management curriculum , would you be willing to host a class? in the natural flow of my conversations my interlocutor will often inquire what is the best way to store their keys.
[18:55] dorion: whaack, we didn't really shut it down, but we also didn't manage to get much traction for it.
[19:00] dorion: http://jfxpt.com/2026/jwrd-logs-for-sep-2026/#16115 -- they all end at about 2GB, but it's not a uniform cut off, one of my nodes has, e.g. (2097361271, blk0001.dat) (2097295438, blk0002.dat) (2097179300, blk0003.dat) (2097222364, blk0004.dat) (2097222566, blk0005.dat). what do you mean by partially between files though ?
[19:00] wotbot: 2026-09-17 18:01 (#jwrd) whaack: blk.dat files don't end nciely, right? I could have blk002.dat that has data partially in blk003.dat iirc
[19:02] dorion: if you recall, to restore a back up, you need all the blk0*.dat to match with the blkindex.dat at the time it was backed up.
[19:12] dorion: i seem to have worn out the right ctrl on my das keyboard, via hammering the kvm shortcut :-/
[19:13] dorion: whaack, shane & his sons seemed to be a candidate to learn in a group and we would've cut'em a deal, but haven't heard from him since he visited here.
[19:39] whaack: dorion: if you recall, to restore a back up, you need all the blk0*.dat to match with the blkindex.dat at the time it was backed up. << yeah that's what i was thinking about
[19:40] whaack: so if my last blkn.dat (n being the latest/highest number in my .bitcoin) is corrupted, but i don't have a saved blkindex.dat for some n-1, then i have to go through the whole chain again, right?
[19:43] dorion: whaack, pretty much, yeah. if you have the prior blk0x.dats, you can use eatblock to save time on sync compared to the bottlenecks associated with syncing from the net.
[19:44] whaack: dorion: right, i guess i'll have to do that
[19:44] dorion: how do you know it's the most recent blk.dat that's corrupted ?
[19:45] whaack: i don't, i don't even know if a blk.dat is corrupted
[19:45] dorion: share the error message(s) you're getting prior to nuking it though.
[19:45] whaack: next time i'm by that machine i'll post the debug.log
[19:45] dorion: it could be something simple, like a stale .lock file.
[19:46] dorion: the dubug.log might be gigabytes though, lols.
[19:47] whaack: well i'd share the last 100 lines or so
[19:48] dorion: one test to check blk*.dat corruption i've used in the past was to sha1sum all the files, which will barf on corrupted files. but seems like you're not at that step yet.
[19:50] whaack: since i'm making a youtube channel i tried to grok http://trilema.com/2021/the-current-instagram-algorithm-or-monkeys-and-microscopes-again/ , i believe youtube uses a similar algorithm although perhaps not quite the same. I am not sure what mp's point was here tho, to the best of my understanding he's stating that when you offer new content, you have 0 to offer, and yet if your image/video/text has tags that match a profile's desires, they have a chance to
[19:50] whaack: see your output. This seemingly "fair" method means that there's always a noise in the signal, and so even if people subscribe to you ,when they go to their feed your (the creator's) output is mixed in with endless piles of spam
[23:33] jfw: http://jfxpt.com/2026/jwrd-logs-for-sep-2026/#16116 - this sounds like possibly compiler / dev environment not even installed?
[23:33] wotbot: 2026-09-17 18:02 (#jwrd) whaack: also on my centos using your fetch bitcoind 0006 script i had some error regarding '-lc', sorry again i'm not by my computer so can't give a better description than that
[23:39] jfw: http://jfxpt.com/2026/jwrd-logs-for-sep-2026/#16115 - taking the question literally, an individual block never splits between two block files; that's why the full blkNNNN.dat file size varies slightly
[23:39] wotbot: 2026-09-17 18:01 (#jwrd) whaack: blk.dat files don't end nciely, right? I could have blk002.dat that has data partially in blk003.dat iirc
[23:48] jfw: there are certainly ways to diagnose or zoom in on the exact corruption, especially with the getblockindex RPC, depending on your preference for human time navigating data structures vs. machine time restarting from zero.
[23:50] jfw: in hosting news, clockspeed feeder scripts are now in place to give the VM guests an hourly nudge back toward the host clock and thus UTC/UT1.

[00:21] whaack: evening jfw
[00:31] jfw: ahoy whaack, how goes?
[00:41] whaack: jfw: pretty well, i am supposed to have a student to tutor in the next 23 mins, but the parent has informed me that they are sleeping and thus may have to cancel, unfortunately I did not make my 24 hour policy clear to them yet, won't make that mistake in the future
[00:46] jfw: that in person or online? either way yeah, people mess with your time if you let them
[00:47] whaack: online
[00:49] jfw: so not as much of a loss but still messes with your schedule & energy
[00:50] jfw: and they fall behind
[00:50] whaack: mhm
[00:51] whaack: I am only planning on doing online tutoring going forward. I've had success with some in person students, and it certainly has an edge, but the convenience of online is much nicer (obv) and I think it's overall more economical. Plus there are lots of advantages to doing the session through a computer.
[00:58] whaack: re bitcoind troubles, yeah resyncing would cost me less time then figuring out what's wrong, i'm just going to have it sit there anyways, i'll give it a couple of hours and then just start from scratch if necessary
[01:06] jfw: basically the datadir is an integral whole and needs backing up as such without any running node to touch it - blk files, blkindex and database/ transaction log dir.

[02:19] jfw: http://jfxpt.com/2026/jwrd-logs-for-sep-2026/#16112 - lots of raw information is available through the source code & commentary but I suspect it's hard to know where to start or how to get into it. how about picking a goal, like getting an MPWP-capable LAMP stack running (easier) or adding a gport for some missing program (harder), so as to naturally generate questions which I can then answer
[02:19] wotbot: 2026-09-17 17:57 (#jwrd) whaack: i'm taking the time to learna. little bit more about galex, so far i've had the learn-the-bare-minimum-to-do-what-i-need-right-now approach to the os
[02:22] jfw: *learn a little bit more about gales (since the typo was already making this harder to find)

[17:05] btcexplorer: mins_since_last_block: -48
[17:05] whaack: good morning all
[17:05] whaack: jfw: i would like to try to make a znc gport
[17:08] whaack: and yeah, probably get a LAMP stack setup for mpwp, would be nice to mirror ztkfg.com
[17:35] whaack: current bitcoind error, i am not actually sure which patch this bitcoind is running http://jfxpt.com/paste/det74ak7vk
[17:40] whaack: and yeah my fetch-bitcoind.sh error is "/usr/bin/ld cannot find -lc"
[20:06] jfw: still triggered any time I look at that codebase... but yeah, "CAutoFile::read : end of file" almost certainly means a truncated blkNNNN.dat on disk.
[20:07] jfw: did you install gcc or anything on that other machine?
[20:11] jfw: I guess so if it at least gets as far as ld. hm, it's probably because centos fails to include the static libc.a even in glibc-devel; try installing glibc-static
[20:12] whaack: jfw: yes. I'm pretty sure my last .dat file is corrupted because my computer ran out of space on the SSD that was being used to store the Bitcoin data directory.
[20:13] whaack: My current plan is to resync in a new directory on a new SSD that is 4 TB. I'm going to use 'eatblock' to speed up the process
[20:13] jfw: it's supposed to just fail if it can't grow the file rather than corrupting anything, but, well.
[20:14] whaack: Well if we want, I can preserve the directory and we can try to examine why it fails to do that.
[20:17] dorion: whaack, how big is your debug.log in that directory ?
[20:19] whaack: ~4 MB
[20:22] dorion: is it the node where you have the block explorer ?
[20:23] whaack: no that one is running smoothly, it's on my local desktop
[20:23] whaack: !e view-height
[20:23] btcexplorer: block_height: 968040
[20:23] btcexplorer: mins_since_last_block: -52
[20:24] jfw: whaack: did the machine crash or get hard reset in addition to just the disk fillup? one possible hole is coming to mind where the block file is fsync'd but the directory holding it is not when a new file is created
[20:24] whaack: (to be clear - the one i'm debugging now is on my desktop, which is not the one running btcexplorer)
[20:25] whaack: jfw: possibly but i'm not aware
[20:25] whaack: i came back to my machine after not using it for a while and saw a mostly full disk and bitciond won't start
[20:25] jfw: how big is that last block file?
[20:27] whaack: 358MB
[20:33] jfw: the dir sync thing seems quite unlikely; but then, if the disk write fails, it doesn't touch the database - http://jfxpt.com/codeview/tree/bitcoin/bitcoin_reorg_bounded_space/bitcoin/src/main.cpp#L1355
[20:39] jfw: "mostly full" isn't quite full either. whaack: you could run it under gdb, it should break on the c++ exception and perhaps you can inspect to find which file exactly is short
[20:40] whaack: alright ill try with gdb...havent used it since college
[20:43] whaack: i don't know that the disk failed, it's just a theory, i'm not sure that it was filled, that's why i said "mostly filled" , because it had very little space left, it's possible at some point it ran out of space and then i cleared up some space without running bitcoind
[20:56] jfw: I'd say the minimum gdb survival commands are run (r), backtrace (bt), print (p), up/down, break (b), next (n), step (s), continue (c), list (l), examine (x), help.
[20:57] whaack: btw, installing gblic-static seemed to do the trick re the fetch-bitcoind.sh error
[21:00] jfw: nice, yeah the keksum makefile is like "please to be serious, I don't even need printf so don't give me this dynamic linking stuff"
[21:02] jfw: http://jfxpt.com/2026/jwrd-logs-for-sep-2026/#16174 - sounds fine in principle, from what I heard of znc, though didn't get to a closer look yet
[21:02] wotbot: 2026-09-21 17:05 (#jwrd) whaack: jfw: i would like to try to make a znc gport
[21:13] jfw: some other basics I still want ported are iptables and texinfo
Day changed to 2026-09-23
[01:43] dorion: whaack, the bouncer work-around on gales to date is yrc+tmux on server via ssh.
